The Vineyard Playhouse may be under construction this summer, but that isn’t stopping them from putting on plenty of shows. First up are their Monday Night Specials, beginning June 25 and continuing throughout the summer. This year the shows are being held at the Hebrew Center, 130 Center street, Vineyard Haven.

The Monday Night Specials are special in many ways, but mostly because they allow audience members to get a peek behind the curtain, so to speak, at works in progress. These shows are key parts of the development process for the playwrights, directors and actors.

The first show is called the King, a one character play adapted from King Lear, performed by John Basinger and directed by Jim Stidfole.

The next special is on July 2 and features Tony Shalhoub, Brooke Adams and Robert Brustein in a reading of Making A Movie, a theatrical presentation of two works by Mordechai Richler.

For a full list of Monday Night Specials and all of the other productions the playhouse is producing this summer, including, but not limited to Shakespeare Outdoors and the Fabulists, theatre for children, both held at the ampitheater by the Tashmoo Overlook, visit vineyardplayhouse.org or call 508-696-6300, ext. 28 or 508-693-6450, ext. 13

The Vineyard Playhouse also hosts a summer theatre arts camp (Summer Stars) for kids held this year at the Tashmoo Spring building, 400 West Spring street, Vineyard Haven. Summer Stars is now in its 20th year. The camp is for kids ages 9 to 14 and runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning July 9 and continuing through the summer.
