On July 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Library, there will be both a screening and discussion relating to the issues of returning soldiers.

Two short films begin the evening. American Standard, written and directed by David Henry Gerson, follows a troubled veteran returning home from Afghanistan to his waiting undocumented immigrant girlfriend. The film stars and is based in part on the experience of Sgt. Marco Reininger, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.

Poster-Girl, a 2011 Academy Award nominee for best documentary short film, directed by Sara Nesson, tells the story of Robynn Murray, a cheerleader turned soldier who has to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from battle. This documentary follows Ms. Murray over the course of two years as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption through art and poetry.

After the films, participants in the Vineyard’s Healing Waters project, which helps wounded veterans recuperate and recover through the sport of fishing, will share memories of their time on the Vineyard participating in the annual Striped Bass and Bluefish Tournament.
