The Flying Elbows string band featuring Jemima James, Dan Waters and Al Schackman performs tonight, July 24, at the Grange Hall as part of the Tuesdays at Twilight concert series to benefit the West Tisbury Library.

Jemima James and her 1960s-era Gibson Hummingbird guitar have long been a major part of the Vineyard folk music scene. Before moving to the Island to raise her family, she played in clubs in Greenwich Village, San Francisco and Los Angeles, where she appeared regularly at The Troubadour and The Hollywood Canteen.

Al Schackman has played and recorded with numerous stars throughout the decades, including Nina Simone and Harry Belafonte, and Dan Waters was named West Tisbury’s first Poet Laureate in 2006. He now dedicates his energies to songwriting.

The Flying Elbows is an old-time fiddle band consisting of Tom Hodgson, Nancy Jephcote, Bob Hammond, Brian Weiland and Paul Thurlow.

Future Tuesdays at Twilight concerts will feature Danna Banana (children’s performer Dan Cohen), Tim Laursen’s Blue Elephant Robot, Nina Violet and Lilah Larson with Sons of an Illustrious Father.

Doors open at 7 p.m. tonight. Admission is $15, with tickets for sale at the door.
