With a shark tournament, a local festival and summer crowds in town, Oak Bluffs police had a busy weekend: Friday through Sunday, the department made 21 arrests, placed four people in protective custody, and responded to 140 incidents.

According to the police weekend log, there were 10 charges of disorderly conduct and three incidents of minors possessing or attempting to procure alcohol. Most of the activity happened on Saturday night, when there were nine arrests between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Oak Bluffs police Lieut. Timothy Williamson said the increase in activity may have been related to the crowds that come for the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament, which took place at the Oak Bluffs harbor over the weekend. But he noted that this weekend was also the Holy Ghost Feast at the Portuguese-American Club, and a “busy weekend in July.”

The shark tournament “brings a lot of people into town,” Lieutenant Williamson said, and there was a lot of drinking going on. He noted that many of the arrests were related to alcohol-fueled incidents.

The weekend last year “wasn’t that busy,” he added, so the activity was more than expected. Even with officers working overtime shifts this year, “probably next year we’ll staff even better,” he said.

“This year seemed over the top,” he added.

The incidents included what police called a large fight near the Madison Inn on Kennebec avenue, which led to the arrest of a Chilmark man and a Bedford man. A 22-year-old Hyannis man involved in the fight allegedly jumped over a fence in the back of the Ritz Cafe, climbed onto a roof and then jumped off the roof onto Circuit avenue. Police said he then led officers “on a lengthy foot pursuit” down Circuit avenue, through the Tabernacle and onto Dukes County avenue. He was then taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing and resisting arrest.

A 22-year-old Worcester man was arrested and charged with larceny after officers said they observed him allegedly stealing a moped and attempting to ride it down Central avenue.

Two men were arrested after a fist fight in front of the Dive Bar, and a man was arrested for disorderly conduct and drug possession after allegedly punching another man outside of Seasons Pub.
