An Edgartown woman was arrested on drunken driving charges Tuesday after she was involved in a two-car crash in West Tisbury that sent two to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Jennifer Brown, 33, of Edgartown was headed south on State Road Tuesday just after 4 p.m. when she rear-ended a car driven by Joseph Spinelli, 72, West Tisbury police Cpl. Garrison Vieira said.

Corporal Vieira said Mr. Spinelli, who was driving a red Subaru with Florida plates, was stopped for a vehicle making a turn when Ms. Brown, driving a Toyota Tacoma, came up from behind and hit his vehicle.

The collision caused the Subaru to roll over onto its side and the Toyota went into the woods, Corporal Vieira said. Mr. Spinelli was trapped inside the vehicle for a short time and was extracted by emergency responders.

Both people were taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by Tri-Town ambulance and treated for minor injuries, he said.

Ms. Brown was released and arrested on charges of drunken driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, following too closely, speed greater than reasonable, failure to wear a seat belt and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to police.

The West Tisbury fire department, Tri-Town Ambulance and Chilmark police also responded, Corporal Vieira said, and State Road was closed for a time between Indian Hill and South Indian Hill Roads.
