Gould Goes Abstract

August is the month of abstract at the Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven. The new art show, which opened this week, features the abstract imaginings of six artists as they interpret The Emotions of Color and Passions of Gesture. The artists include Wendy Weldon, Marsha Staiger, Joan Konkel, Laura Roosevelt, Roberta Gross and Craig Cahoon. The show continues through August 29.

Ms. Weldon, a full time Chilmark resident, will present four monoprints which suggest rocks and rock formations. Ms. Staiger, an Island visitor, displays her cradled boards which reflect her response to the textures, colors and changing history of each painting. Ms. Konkel’s wall paintings, which range from 12 inches to 60 inches, incorporate on canvas such different materials as metal mesh, aluminum sheet and acrylic paint. Ms. Gross, a resident of Aquinnah, will hang her mixed media pieces, consisting of collagraphs and hand-painted paper collages. Ms. Roosevelt, a year-round resident of West Tisbury, is an emerging abstract photographer. Mr. Cahoon’s small paintings synthesize his experiences into very minimal shapes, often drawn with conte crayon over the painted surface.

Meet the artists at the opening reception on August 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.
