Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard wants to insure that citizens are current with their voter registration for the upcoming election season — including any change in name or address, or registering for the first time.

Friday, August 17 is the last day to register to vote in the state primary election on Sept. 6, and Oct. 17 is the last day to register for the state and national election on Nov. 6.

The League reminds Vineyard residents that they can register at their town hall in the town clerk’s office or at the Registry of Motor Vehicles or by mail using an official state form available at the town clerk’s office or online with the Massachusetts Secretary of State.

People who are eligible to register to vote in the commonwealth of Massachusetts must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Massachusetts, and 18 years old on or before election day (and must still meet registration deadlines).

The League urges citizens to be prepared before voting in the Sept. 6 primary election. This is the election when political parties will choose their candidates and there are contested races on the Democratic primary ballot for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The state and national election on Nov. 6 asks voters to elect a President and members of congress, state Legislature and Dukes County commission, and vote on three statewide ballot questions. More information on the ballot questions is also available online at the Secretary of State’s website.

After you confirm that your voter registration is current, the League wants to remind each of you the power of one vote — your vote — use it.
