Friends, family and local dignitaries staged a luncheon and party at the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging Wednesday in honor of Alice Rose's 102nd birthday. With this birthday, Ms. Rose is now the oldest person in the town of Oak Bluffs, a designation that earned her the Boston Post cane. The tradition began in 1909, when Boston Post publisher Edwin Grosier awarded some 700 canes to the oldest citizens in New England towns. Rep. Tim Madden (left) attended the celebration and read a State House proclamation in Ms. Rose's honor. Council on Aging director Roger Wey officiated at the ceremony.
