For the first time in three years, the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has more dogs than cats available for adoption. One who may be gone by the time this makes it into print is Java, a two-year-old lhasa apso-beagle cross. Her mother, Sarah, is five years old and also available. Both are tan and very sweet and great with children and cats and other dogs. Tiger is an Italian greyhound-dachshund cross and also very sweet. Popi is a big black male greyhound. All the dogs have been neutered and are up to date with their shots.

Cats available for adoption are Danny, a nine-week-old ginger and white kitten; Moses, an older blue point Siamese; and Rex, another older black and white cat.

And then there is Pinto, a beautiful little Abyssinian black and brown guinea pig.

A reminder to anyone considering adopting a pet — if you live in a rental home or apartment, it is important to have landlord permission to bring a pet into your home.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. The Susie Fund was established to pay the medical expenses of animals at the shelter who need medical care.
