The Vineyard Haven Library is stepping into the great fall void with a full list of programs.

On Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. James Sullivan, author of Island Cup: Two Teams, Twelve Miles of Ocean, and Fifty Years of Football, will be at the library to discuss his book and give the inside scoop behind the story.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, also beginning at 7 p.m., a program entitled The History of Opera begins. Susan Grunthal will present 12 sessions devoted to opera throughout the fall, continuing next May and concluding next fall. By then the Vineyard will be the world’s foremost expert on opera, per capita.

Session one includes a discussion on Monteverdi, Lully and Purcell. Session two, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m., features Mozart, Wagner, Verdi and Puccini.

Each session can be a stand-alone but participants are invited to all 12 sessions to get the full aria, so to speak. Each class lasts about one hour with discussion afterwards. The course is free but anyone interested is asked to sign up so the library can plan for materials.

Susan Grunthal began teaching opera history after 30 years as an attendee of the Metropolitan Opera. She teaches opera history at the Westchester Collegium at five different venues and in the Taconic Chorus in Westchester.
