The bay scallop season is set to open in Edgartown for family scallopers on Oct. 1.

Acting on the recommendation of the shellfish committee and shellfish constable Paul L. Bagnall, the Edgartown selectmen approved dates for the scalloping season on Monday. Recreational scalloping begins Oct. 1, with all areas open and a limit of one 10-gallon wash basket per week. Mr. Bagnall said his department has been monitoring Sengekontacket and Cape Pogue where there is a decent set of scallops this year.

Cape Pogue will be closed to dragging through Oct. 19.

Commercial scalloping begins in Edgartown on Oct. 22 in all areas, with a limit of three 10-gallon wash baskets daily, Monday through Friday.

The bay scallop season runs through March 31. All limits include shells, Mr. Bagnall said, and existing regulations (posted on the town website) apply.

Mr. Bagnall said he anticipates a similar harvest to last year, at about 5,000 bushels.

Scallop season dates in Oak Bluffs are as follows:

Sengekontacket Pond and outside waters will open to recreational permit holders on Saturday, Oct. 13. Commercial scalloping begins in Sengekontacket and outside waters on Monday, Oct. 22. The Lagoon Pond opens for family scalloping on Saturday, Oct. 27, and for commercial scalloping on Monday, Oct. 29.

Scalloping dates have not been set yet in Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah. There are no bay scallops in West Tisbury.
