Tisbury town administrator John Bugbee has officially left his position at town hall, selectman Tristan Israel confirmed this week.

Mr. Bugbee served as town administrator for nine years. At the Sept. 4 selectmen’s meeting the board announced that Mr. Bugbee’s contract would not be renewed and that he would leave his post sometime in the months ahead.

Assistant town administrator Aase Jones will be acting town administrator, Mr. Israel said.

“I’m not concerned about the day-to-day functioning of our town,” said Mr. Israel said by telephone on Wednesday. “We have a veteran staff and everyone knows what they are doing. But on the other hand, we certainly want to get an administrator in here sooner than later and make sure it’s the right person.”

Although the selectmen were not specific about their reasons for not renewing Mr. Bugbee’s contract, which expires on June 13, 2013, there had been tension between the town administrator and the board following an issue involving irregularities over his voter registration.

Mr. Bugbee later apologized and said he had corrected the problem by changing his voter registration to Fall River.

In September the selectmen had asked Mr. Bugbee to continue working for two to four months while a committee searched for a new administrator.

The selectmen appointed the search committee at their Oct. 2 meeting. Serving on the committee is George Balco, who also serves as the town’s port council representative to the Steamship Authority; Rob Doyle, finance committee member; Michael Loberg, board of health chairman; Timothy McLean, town treasurer, and Hillary Conklin, secretary to the selectmen.

The committee is accepting applications for the position until Nov. 30. Mr. Bugbee’s annual salary was $106,384.

Mr. Israel said he hopes to see the a new town administrator named by the end of January.
