On Saturday, Nov. 24, Kara Taylor is holding an opening for her latest exhibit entitled Poetry in Paint, Reflections on Freedom and Confinement. This will be the last reception Ms. Taylor holds at her gallery located at 19 Main street in Vineyard Haven. After seven years at this space she is moving on. She is going out on a powerful note.

The show is a personal one for Ms. Taylor. Of course, all of an artist’s work is personal, but the subject matter for this show cuts especially close to the core.

For the exhibit she has created a series of self-portraits of herself wearing a burka, “the confinement part of the exhibition,” she said. These pieces are in response to the death of Marie Colvin a war correspondent for the Sunday London Times who was killed in Syria last February. Ms. Taylor was a friend of Ms. Colvin’s.

“She was a fiercely brave woman,” Ms. Taylor said. “She was known for being the first reporter into a war zone and the last one out. Her death has invigorated a more political agenda in my work.”

For the freedom part of the exhibit, Ms. Taylor is for the first time letting her poetry out of the closet, so to speak, and adding it to her canvas.

“Many of the pieces have an overlay of text, giving a little more of a literal interpretation,” she said of the work.

The reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
