Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
It is now public knowledge that our family has received an offer for a 12.9-acre parcel of land at the end of Flat Point Farm on Tisbury Great Pond. The land is currently in open pasture and grazed by the farm’s cattle and sheep — a view that we, other pond residents, boaters, painters and walkers enjoy.
We are selling the property so we can keep the rest of the land open and in agriculture.
We would also like to make it public knowledge that because this parcel is taxed as agricultural land (under 61A) the town has a special opportunity to conserve this land with their right of first refusal.
While the town has this right it can also urge the Island’s conservation groups to pursue protecting Flat Point in its entirety. Our family accepts some of the responsibility for not having arrived at an agreement with the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank to date.
Our intention in posting this letter is to make people aware of the opportunity for the town and conservation agencies to preserve this land.
