Lightning never strikes twice, unless it’s hitting the winter sports teams at the regional high school.

On Wednesday night, the girls’ hockey squad scored a decisive 10-3 victory over Nauset to pick up the final two points needed to send them to the playoffs, making it two years in a row that four high school sports teams have qualified for post-season play.

The girls’ hockey team joins the boys’ hockey squad and both basketball teams in qualifying for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association tournament.

In order to advance to the state tournament, a team must earn 20 points in its regular-season schedule. A win is equal to two points, and most teams advance by putting up 10 wins. It is also possible to advance via draws (a tie is worth one point). The girls’ hockey squad, with its 9-3-2 record, took this route.

Another repeat milestone took place this week as the boys’ basketball team used shutdown defense and a deep bench to defeat visiting Coyle 88-46. In doing so, they secured their fourth straight Eastern Athletic Conference championship title. They have won the league every year since joining (the first year, they were co-champions with Bishop Feehan), and finished conference play with a 7-1 record. The boys are 14-3 overall.

The girls’ basketball team, which squeaked into the postseason last year with a win in their final regular-season game, clinched their tenth win early in the season by holding off a tenacious Coyle squad for a 53-42 win on Jan. 18. The girls hold a 12-4 season record, and are undefeated in non-league play.

Boys’ hockey punched their postseason ticket on Jan. 19 with a come-from-behind 3-2 home win against Dennis-Yarmouth. They are 10-4-1 overall.

The newly-formed varsity swim team, as with track and cross-country, does not compete in playoffs, but rather participates in sectional and regional end-of-season meets. The girls’ swim team closed out their regular season last week with their first-ever league meet win, going 71-66 against Coyle and Cassidy. The boys’ swim team missed out on a win by just two points.

Saturday’s sports games have been postponed to later dates due to winter storm alerts. At press time, the boys’ hockey game against Nantucket was moved to Sunday at 1:40 p.m.
