The Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force arrested two Brockton men Wednesday on charges relating to heroin distribution, with police saying the Island is a lucrative market for the drug. Jason Lewis, 32, and Corey Waters, 32, were arraigned Thursday morning in Edgartown district court. Mr. Lewis was charged with possession with intent to distribute a class A drug (heroin) and conspiracy to violate drug law, and bail was set at $7,500, Edgartown Det. Michael Snowden said. Mr. Waters was charged with knowingly being present where heroin is kept and conspiracy to violate drug law, and his bail was set at $1,500.

Detective Snowden, a member of the drug task force, said police received information two days earlier that the two men came to the Island “with a significant amount of heroin.” He said Mr. Lewis and Mr. Waters, who had previously been a “frequent flier on the Island,” arrived on the Island late Sunday and were scheduled to leave Thursday.

After two days of surveillance, Detective Snowden said, the drug task force executed a search warrant at a Vineyard Haven hotel room around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The search yielded 10 individually-wrapped bags of a rock-brown substance that turned out to be heroin, Detective Snowden said, as well as $1,200 in cash and implements involved in the distribution of heroin, such as scales, bags and burner phones.

The heroin, which amounted to just over three grams, he said, was worth more than $1,000. “The price of heroin has gone up significantly over the last couple of months,” Detective Snowden said. The drug sells for about $200 per half a gram, he said, compared with $100 per gram a year ago. And in Brockton, he said heroin sells for about $60 a gram.

“They’re doing quite well when they come down here,” the detective said.

Detective Snowden said he believed the two had already sent “a good amount of money” back to Brockton via Western Union, and had originally come to the Island with about 20 grams of the drug.
