Parts of the Island were without power Sunday afternoon after police said a car hit a guide wire on a utility pole.

State police Trooper Robert Branca said the car’s driver, Wilbur Dean, 70, of West Tisbury, was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a precaution after he apparently blacked out and crossed the road on the south side of State Road near the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Mae Fane property.

The Nissan Sentra apparently went over an embankment just before a guard rail. Mr. Dean was cited for a marked lanes violation, Trooper Branca said, and a notification was sent to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to see if Mr. Wilbur’s license should be revoked because of a medical condition.

The resulting power outage briefly affected large areas of Aquinnah, Chilmark and West Tisbury.

Michael Durand, a spokesman for the power company NStar, said the outage affected 4,600 customers. With the exception of 400 customers, everyone had their power back within about half an hour, and nearly 1,000 customers had power back within four minutes, he said. The 400 remaining customers had their power back within an hour.
