Aquinnah Public Library staff have been working on a schedule of speakers for the summer season. If you are interested in participating as a speaker, please call the library at 508-645-2314. Our sister church, First Baptist Church, will sponsor a pulled pork dinner on Saturday, March 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the parish house on William street. All are welcome. In addition to the pulled pork, there will also be coleslaw, baked beans, corn bread and dessert. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 12. Please call 508-693-1539 for information.

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force invites all parents of eighth grade students to a parent dinner on Wednesday, March 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the regional high school culinary arts dining room. There will be an evening of discussion and resources to support you and your children through the transition from middle school to high school. Please RSVP to info@mvyouthtaskforce.org.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival begins on Friday evening, March 15, and runs through Sunday evening, March 17 at the Chilmark Community Center. This is the 13th annual film festival presented by Thomas Bena and it has gained in popularity each year. On Saturday, March 16, at noon, there will be a program of short films from around the world curated by Jeremy Mayhew, followed by Muscle Shoals featuring interviews with Etta James, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and many others. Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will celebrate spring with its third in a series of cultural luncheons for this

season, focusing on the arts and cultural community of Martha’s Vineyard. The luncheon will be held on Saturday, March 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at The Grill on Main with a delicious luncheon prepared by Chef Antonio Saccoccia and his staff. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum will be featured with chief curator Bonnie Stacy as the presenter. Tickets are $25 per person. For reservations, call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

Condolences to the family of Edward Belisle, who passed away this week at Brigham and Women’s Hospital after a long struggle with cancer. My sincerest condolences to his sister Karen Belisle Child and her family, and to Ed’s wife Janice and their daughter Julie.

Get-well wishes to Beatrice Vanderhoop Gentry, who has returned to her home after a few days of medical care at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Condolences to the family and friends of Ruth Johnson of Manhattan and Aquinnah, who passed away in New York on March 2. Ruth and her family have been summer residents at Dongan Manor for the past half century. They were neighbors and close friends of the Allen, Leonard, and Weiss families who also spent their summers in the same Lighthouse Road neighborhood. David, Eleanor and Amy will have a memorial service for Ruth on the Vineyard this summer.

Curtis Langer and his wife, Molly Purves, and their son, Rodeo, returned home this weekend after spending their vacation at Jay’s Peak with friends. They also traveled to Montreal for a few days, and a visit with family in Vermont on their way back home.

Get-well wishes to Ryan Malonson, who has returned home after being a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital and at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Noah Manning returned home on Saturday night after having spent the week in Orlando, Fla. with his friends Kelly McCracken and her children Luke and Reece of Chappy ,and of course his parents, Paul and Theresa. They enjoyed Universal Studios, especially the Harry Potter studio, and returning home with those magic wands. They all enjoyed the Blue Man Group. The pool was fun each day at their resort. Lego Land was also a favorite stop for Noah.

Happy 60th anniversary wishes to Ted and Shirley Dewing as they celebrate their very special day on March 9.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Michael Johnson on March 9. Linda McCarthy parties on March 11 and shares the day with Tiffany Smalley. James V. Taylor will celebrate his special day on March 12. Kane Araujo will party on March 12 and his first cousins Maya and Jade will be 11 years old on March 13, while their father Todd Araujo celebrates on March 14.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop and Nina P. Butler share the day on March 13. My nephew Robert W. C. Manning will celebrate a major milestone on March 14. Jay Smalley also celebrates on March 14.
