Two key promotions were announced this week for the Vineyard Gazette editorial staff by the newspaper’s publisher Jane Seagrave.

Bill Eville has been named managing editor of the 166-year-old community weekly. And Gazette news editor Vanessa Czarnecki has been promoted to news editor and director of digital content.

Mr. Eville has worked at the Gazette since 2010, when he was hired as arts and features editor. He has been reading the Gazette since he learned to read. One of his chores as a boy was to walk up Circuit avenue to get the mail, in particular the Gazette. His grandfather Bill Harding was a frequent contributor of poems, and Bill’s first published piece in the paper was a eulogy to his grandfather written in 2001 on the year anniversary of his death. This year he won two first-place awards for his writing from the New England Newspaper and Press Association. His work has also been published in the New York Times and appeared on this This American Life.

He moved to the Island full time in 2008 with his wife the Rev. Cathlin Baker and two children, Hardy and Eirene (Pickle). Reverend Baker is minister of the West Tisbury Congregational Church.

Mr. Eville holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University, an MBA from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in creative writing from Florida State University. He was previously vice president of film and television development for Sonnenfeld/Josephson Productions, a division of the Walt Disney Company.

Ms. Czarnecki has worked at the Gazette since 2011 and previously served as editor of Martha’s Vineyard Patch. Prior to that she was managing editor of the Boston Phoenix, a news magazine with a weekly circulation of more than 100,000. She also wrote for the Paris bureau of the Associated Press, and her work has been published in the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, the Miami Herald and the Chicago Tribune. She has received several awards from the New England Newspaper and Press Association for writing and editing.

She graduated with honors from Boston University, where she studied journalism, French literature and U.S. history. She lives in West Tisbury with her fiance and a cat that can open the refrigerator.

Additionally this week Ms. Seagrave announced that Mona Rosenthal has joined the Gazette media group as an account executive. Ms. Rosenthal was previously with Martha’s Vineyard Online as a senior accounts manager and was a co-owner of Outerland, the former nightclub and music venue that is now Flatbread Pizza. She lives in West Tisbury. Ms. Rosenthal joins the sales team, managing advertising accounts for the Vineyard Gazette, Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, Island Weddings Magazine, the Real Estate Yearbook, the Welcome to Martha’s Vineyard travel guide and associated websites. She will report to sales manager BJ Yerdon and Skip Finley, director of sales and marketing.
