The high school track and field teams are off and running, with two wins for the boys and two losses for the girls in field events against visiting teams this week.

The boys’ squad had home wins over Abington and EAC opponent Somerset. The girls’ team fell to both opponents despite strong performances in field events. Senior Maggie Riseborough won the shot put and discus during Wednesday’s Somerset meet, senior Shavanae Anderson took first in the triple jump and long jump, and junior Mariah Campbell took first in the high jump.

Boys’ tennis got off to a strong start this week with wins against Division 1 squads Barnstable and Falmouth. The team now has a 25-game undefeated streak.

The boys swept a young Barnstable (one member is an eight grader) team  5-0. Senior Natty Schneider had a 6-4, 6-2 win in the number one spot and senior Kent Leonard earned a 7-6, 6-0 victory. Senior Justice Yennie continued his undefeated streak with a 6-2, 6-0 win. On the double courts, the number two duo of Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer had the most competitive match of the day, going to three sets to win 6-7, 6-4, 10-4. Number one pair Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy went 6-4, 7-5.

Schneider dropped his match to Falmouth’s Spencer Pinkney on Wednesday 6-1, 6-0 for the Vineyard’s only loss of the day. Head coach Ned Fennessy said Yennie and both doubles squads powered through their matches in one hour to secure the team win. Leonard came back from a 1-6 first set to win the next two 6-2, 6-2 and give the Vineyarders the 4-1 victory.

Conference play begins next week.

The young boys’ lacrosse squad got off to a shaky start, falling to Fairhaven 17-7 in its season opener last Friday. Senior captain Nick Costello scored four goals and had two assists, while senior Thomas Wilkins had two goals and four assists, and Taymon Brown had a goal and an assist.

On Monday, the team lost 10-3 in its first league match against Bishop Stang. Freshman goalie Eli Lakin had 8 saves in Thursday’s game against Nauset, a close 7-6 loss.

Girls’ lacrosse fell to Dartmouth 13-8 in their opener last Thursday but came back strongly Monday with a 21-13 win against Mashpee.

The girls picked up their first win of the season on Monday, defeating Mashpee in a 20-13 in an offensive. Senior captain Alayna Hutchinson scored five goals with three assists; fellow senior Taylor Poggi also had five and one assist. Sophomore Emily deBettencourt had a standout game at center, scoring three goals with one assist. The junior varsity team also picked up its first win, going 9-1 against Mashpee, and earned a second win on Tuesday against Bishop Stang.

The girls host Marblehead Saturday at noon, and rematch with Dartmouth on Monday.
