Chilmark enjoyed a busy but rainy Mother’s Day weekend. It is usually the first weekend of visits from seasonal residents and the first holiday weekend that feels like spring. Most businesses will open this coming weekend, although some were ready for the early visitors. The restaurants are mostly open now. The Beach Plum Inn restaurant will be open Thursday through Sundays this month with a Sunday Supper Series. The Galley and The Bite will both open May 16, and the Beetlebung Café will open on May 20. That leaves the Home Port and the Chilmark Tavern — details to follow! The Chilmark Store will also open on May 16.

Mary Jane Pease invites all who knew and loved Mike Pease to join her at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery on Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m., for a memorial celebration of his life. She also invites all to a reception at their home, the Old Hunt Place, after the gathering. Car pooling to the house is suggested, as parking is limited. Mike had many friends in Chilmark and will be missed by all.

Anne Sutherland visited her North Road home last week in preparation of a busy season of visits by family and friends.

I enjoy finding interesting websites of fellow Chilmark folk that I can share with you. I recently found arlanwise.com. Arlan is a Chilmark resident and a professional astrologer. For many years she offered a column in a local paper and she has continued that with the website. She is very active in her field participating in meetings and lectures. She keeps us up to date with her website. Recently she traveled to Boulder to attend an annual board meeting of the Organization of Professional Astrology, of which she is a vice president. She stopped in St. Paul on her way home for a Mother’s Day visit with her daughter Sara and her family. Arlan’s website is a forecast of events for each month. If you have missed her in print, you can find her there.

The West Tisbury Library Foundation invites us to a fundraising event at the State Road Restaurant on May 22 at 5:30 p.m. Author Judy Hannan will be the speaker and light refreshments are offered.

The Vineyard Conservation Society invites the public to a Mushroom Walk at the Menemsha Hills Reservation on Sunday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Wesley Price will lead the walk and you can preregister by calling 508-693-7662.

Another of my favorite websites is massmoments.org and they tell us that it was on May 15, 1602, that Bartholomew Gosnold and his crew on the Concord first landed on what was to be named Cape Cod in honor of the many fish the crew caught off its shore. There is a monument to the explorer on Cuttyhunk to commemorate that date. Where have all the cod fish gone?

Please send me all your people news. This is a busy time for this correspondent and I rely on you all to keep me posted about the excitements in the life of Chilmarkers! Thank you.
