As the spring sports regular season draws to a close, three teams have qualified for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association postseason tournament: boys' and girls' tennis and girls' softball. A number of track athletes have also qualified for competition in the annual division four state meet.

Boys’ tennis became the first team with the necessary 10 wins to qualify; they have also earned a fourth consecutive Eastern Athletic Conference title. They were joined by the girls’ squad last week after the Vineyarders won three straight matches. Softball earned a postseason berth on Friday with a 14-7 win against Falmouth.

The boys’ track squads sends representatives in nearly every event to the state meet at North Reading this weekend. Co-captain Jacob Lawrence qualified in three events (100-metre dash, 200-metre dash and long jump) and co-captain Michael Schroeder qualified in the mile, the 4-by-800 relay, and the 4-by-400 relay. Seniors Kyle Joba-Woodruff, Mike Cutrer, Diego deFreitas, and Andrew Freitas travel to the meet along with juniors Jeremy Alley-Tarter, Tony Breth, Galen Mayhew, Isaiah Maynard and Joe Turney.

Senior captain Maggie Riseborough competes in the shot put and discus at the girls’ meet; fellow senior Shavanae Anderson qualified in both long and triple jump. Sophomore Bailey Moreis will also compete in the triple jump. Sophomores Julia Neville and Sabrina Reppert will compete in the 400-metre dash and 800-metre run respectively. The 4-by-100 relay team of Anderson, Moreis, junior Mariah Campbell and senior Dana Jacobs travels to the meet as well.

Sophomore tennis players Samantha Potter and senior co-captain Annie Burton compete this weekend in the MIAA singles tournament at Old Rochester, having advanced to the quarterfinals of the south section. Both are undefeated throughout the tournament, which began two weeks ago.

The team split their matches this week, defeating Cape Cod Academy 3-2 on Tuesday but falling 4-1 to Cohasset Monday. Last week, the girls secured three wins in three days to earn a spot in the postseason tournament. In the clinching match against Coyle and Cassidy, freshmen Mia Arenberg and Olivia Jacobs took a 6-2, 6-0 win at second doubles in their first varsity appearance.

Representatives from the boys tennis team participated in the MIAA tournament last weekend as well. Senior doubles players Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer entered with a number two seed in the tournament and upset number one seed Duxbury in a match that lasted more than two hours. Sawyer and Smith advanced to the semifinals of the south section, but fell to Dartmouth’s number one pair last weekend.

Seniors Kent Leonard and Justice Yennie participated in the singles tournament.

Meanwhile, three games remain on the girls’ lacrosse schedule, with the team splitting last week’s matches against Mashpee and Scituate. Seniors Alayna Hutchinson and Taylor Poggi were honored at halftime during the Mashpee game; the duo then led the team in scoring as the Vineyarders picked up a 19-9 win. Hutchinson and Poggi have combined for 84 goals and 37 assists on the season.

Junior Molly Wallace led the team in assists against Mashpee, with seven total. Freshman Lee Hayman had four assists. Junior Issy Smith and freshman KC Wallace made strong showings on both offense and defense, while sophomore Emily deBettencourt controlled the center draw from the start. Goalie Samantha Hargy had 10 saves.
