The Grey Barn Farm stand has been closed following a fire in the creamery late Friday.

In a text message to the Gazette Sunday, farm owner Eric Glasgow said the organic dairy off South Road in Chilmark has closed. ”We’ve closed the farmstand for the foreseeable future. Also . . . we won’t be doing tours anymore,” Mr. Glasgow said.

The barn also made an announcement about the closure on its Facebook page.

“For those of you who don’t know or haven’t heard, we experienced a catastrophic fire on Friday night. Our creamery has been almost completely destroyed. There will not be raw milk for the foreseeable future and the farmstand is now closed,” the announcement says.

Grey Barn is owned by Eric and Molly Glasgow. The fire took place late Friday; volunteer firefighters from Chilmark and West Tisbury responded to the call at 11 p.m.

Chilmark fire chief David Norton said early Saturday he believed the fire was electrical in origin but the cause will be determined later by electrical and fire inspectors. The fire was confined to the farm creamery, the center of a milk bottling and cheesmaking operation.

“There was considerable damage,” Mr. Norton told the Gazette Saturday morning. “I’m trying to get the wire inspector and electrical inspector to come and look at it,” he said. “I’m not going to say much more beyond that.”

He said electrical power has been cut off to the creamery.

No people or animals were harmed, the fire chief said, but he said there was extensive smoke damage to the interior of the creamery which he described as a “well kept structure.”

Mr. Glasgow said early Saturday that the farm stand would remain open as usual and welcomed customers. The farm sells milk, eggs and meat from the stand.

But by the next day the stand was closed.
