Postseason play begins this week with three Vineyard high school teams earning spots in the state tournament.

Three track athletes also will participate in the all-state meet this weekend.

The boys’ tennis team has earned a number two seed in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association south section division three tournament. The team has a bye in the first round and will begin play in the quarterfinals, hosting the winner of the Bishop Connolly/Seekonk match at home on Monday. Play begins at 3 p.m.

The boys finished the season 16-1 with a double header against Dover-Sherborn last Thursday. Senior Natty Schneider, playing at first singles, rallied from a 1-4 first set deficit to draw even with opponent Stefano Barbier and finally prevail in the tiebreaker. Senior co-captain Kent Leonard was undefeated this season, while fellow captain Justice Yennie was 13-1.

The girls’ tennis team is seeded eighth in the south section. The girls posted an 11-5 season record, and will host number nine seed Westport in the first round today at 3 p.m.

Last weekend sophomore Samantha Potter and senior co-captain Annie Burton competed in the MIAA individual singles tournament at Old Rochester. This was the first year the Vineyard girls have sent two players to the individual final rounds.

Potter upset Foxboro’s Emma Prinos, but both Vineyard players ultimately fell to Cohasset’s Emma Davis, who won the tournament.

The softball team is seeded 19th in the south division two tournament. The team finished its season with an 11-9 record and will play number 14 seed Holliston in an away game on Thursday.

Individual competition continues for track athletes, with three individual athletes and one relay team moving on to the all-state meet this weekend, where they will compete against athletes from divisions one, two and three.

The Vineyard girls earned a 14th place finish (of 43 teams) at the division four state meet on Saturday. Senior captain Maggie Riseborough took first in the shot put with a 37’11.5” throw, and senior Shavanae Anderson turned in a third place finish in triple jump. Because both girls placed in the top four in their respective events, they advance to the all-state meet.

The boys placed 13th of 39 teams, with junior Jeremy Alley-Tarter winning the 800-metre run and moving on to all-state. He is joined by seniors Michael Schroeder and Kyle Joba-Woodruff and junior Isaiah Maynard on the 4-by-800 relay team, which placed fourth on Saturday to advance to the state meet. The Vineyard also earned points Saturday in Schroeder’s eighth place mile run and senior Jacob Lawrence’s fifth place finish in the 200-metre dash.

The sailing team closed out its season with a spate of successful championship races, posting an 11-10 season record. The team, composed largely of sophomores, is ranked 12th of all New England schools, public and private, and sixth among public schools. Last season, the squad was ranked 16th overall at the end of the year.

The squad split up on May 18 to compete in two different races: the Women’s Cape and Island Fleet Racing Championships on Nantucket, and the Public School Team Racing Championships in Sharon. Sophomores Maddy Moore and Lila Sullivan and freshman Margaret Joba-Woodruff made the trip to Nantucket with coaching assistant Maggie Lumkes, taking second place out of 10 teams.

“They did stellar,” head coach Andrew Burr said.

An all-sophomore varsity team traveled to Sharon for the public school championships, racing against five other New England teams. An overall victory in the round robin race day would have sent the Vineyard to the National Invitational Tournament in Milwaukee. The sailors defeated Hingham, Wellesley and host team Sharon, but took third behind North Kingston, R.I., and Falmouth, Me.

“The racing with Falmouth and North Kingston was incredibly close; it could have gone either way,” Coach Burr said, describing the regatta as a “great, great event” for the young team.

On May 19, the team reunited on Nantucket for the racing championships, another round robin tournament. The Vineyarders took second overall after a nail-biting loss to Bishop Stang. Sailing for the squad were sophomore Raz Sayre and Anna Flaherty, Eli Hanskca and Russell Shapiro, and Charlie Morano and Ellie Reagan.

The 2013 season was expected to be a rebuilding year, but the young team exceeded expectations throughout the spring. Coach Burr said next year the team will have its sights set on national competition.

“Next year our goal is top eight [overall],” he said.

Also this week the Eastern Athletic Conference All Stars were announced.

For the second year in a row, the entire starting seven of the boys’ varsity tennis team received all star honors. The all-star tennis lineup includes seniors Natty Schneider, Kent Leonard, Justice Yennie, Justin Smith, Ryan Sawyer and Jackson McBride, and junior Patrick McCarthy.

In girls’ tennis, senior captains Annie Burton and Julia Cooper received all-star honors, as did sophomore Samantha Potter and senior Annabelle Hackney. In boys’ lacrosse, senior Nick Costello and sophomore Liam Smith were named all stars. In girls’ lacrosse, senior captains Alayna Hutchinson and Taylor Poggi and juniors Isabel Smith and Molly Wallace were named all stars. Senior captain Jack Roberts represented the Vineyard in baseball, and sophomore Emily Turney was the lone softball all star.

In track and field, all-star honors went to seniors Michael Schroeder, Maggie Riseborough and Shavanae Anderson, juniors Jeremy Alley-Tarter and Joe Turney, and sophomore Kevin Montambault.
