Girls' tennis won its first match of the postseason tournament Friday afternoon with  5-0 sweep of visiting Westport. The Vineyarders are seeded eighth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association South Section Division 3  tournament. Westport is seeded ninth.

The first doubles team of senior co-captain Julia Cooper and sophomore Josie Iadicicco picked up the Vineyard's first win after just an hour of play, blanking opponents Layla Moran and Kelsey Gestodio 6-0, 6-0. Ten minutes later the second doubles pair of sophomores, Diamond Araujo and Avery Hazell, went 6-3, 6-2 against Zoe Shea and Melinda Tripp.

Senior co-captain Annie Burton, playing at second singles, sealed the Vineyard win with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Westport's Emma Wilkinson.

The Potter twin sisters, sophomore Samantha at first singles and sophomore Charlotte at third singles, were the last Vineyarders remaining on the courts. Samantha won 6-0, 6-1 against Katie Rogo and Charlotte was victorious after a lengthy 6-3, 6-2 battle against Amanda Nicholas.

The Vineyarders now advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they will play number one seed Cohasset, a familiar foe for the team. Two years ago the teams faced each other in the quarterfinals with the Vineyard earning a 3-2 win. Last year it was Cohasset that picked up the 3-2 victory in the semifinal round after a two-day match that took place across multiple venues. Cohasset's number one player, nationally ranked Emma Davis, is the only person to beat Samantha Potter this season.

Head coach Connie McHugh scheduled Cohasset for the regular season match this year to better prepare the Vineyarders for the postseason challenge. In that match Burton picked up the lone Vineyard win as Cohasset took a 4-1 win. Cooper and doubles teammate Annabelle Hackney pushed their match to three sets, however, and the sense is Monday's match could go either way.

With Cohasset, coach McHugh said, "You just never know."
