For the second year in a row, track star Maggie Riseborough will represent Martha’s Vineyard at the New England High School Outdoor Championships.

Riseborough, a senior, tied her own personal best in the shot put during Saturday’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association All-State Meet. Competing against athletes from across the state and from all divisions (the Vineyard competes in Division 4), Riseborough threw a 38’4.75” to place sixth overall. Her best throw came in the third and final round of the event.

The boys’ 4x800 relay teams broke a Vineyard school record, running 8:27.17 to place 20th of 28 teams. Junior Jeremy Alley-Tarter opted to scratch the 800 metre run, which he had qualified for as an individual, to focus on the relay. Seniors Michael Schroeder and Kyle Joba-Woodruff and junior Isaiah Maynard rounded out the team.

“You can see what the competition’s like when you set your own school record and finish 20th,” head coach Joe Schroder said. “It’s fun to see.”

Senior Shavanae Anderson, competing in her first-ever season of track and field, placed 14th in the state in the triple jump with a leap of 33’6.25”.

Postseason play continues tomorrow for the tennis teams, both of whom begin quarterfinals play. The eighth-seeded girls travel to Cohasset, while the number-two seeded boys are at home facing 10-seed Seekonk. The boys’ match begins at 3 p.m.

The softball team fell in the first round of the state tournament last week in a 12-0 loss to Holliston. The Vineyard, seeded 19th, managed two hits against 14-seed Holliston. They finish the 2013 season 11-10 overall.
