Congratulations to Christopher Paul Manning who graduated on May 31 from basic enlisted submarine school in Groton, Conn. Chris graduated second in his class of 82 sailors – Class 13260 USS Spinax. He was the only one in his class to be meritoriously advanced from E1 to E2. His graduation exercises were attended by his parents Paul and Theresa, his brother Noah, and his extremely proud grandmother — yours truly. He will remain at Groton for most of the next year while he attends his next two schools prior to being transferred to a submarine.

Congratulations and all the best to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students who will graduate on Sunday at the 54th annual ceremonies. Those graduating from Aquinnah include Alayna Hutchinson, daughter of Steve Hutchinson and the late Amanda Hutchinson. Ella Madison Mahoney will also graduate. Ella is the daughter of Michael Mahoney and Julianne Vanderhoop.

The Aquinnah power cruise will be held on Saturday, June 15, in Aquinnah Circle from noonish to 3 p.m. Members of the Boston Area Roadsters Car Club will be staying at the Wesley House for the weekend and will meet in Aquinnah Circle on Saturday afternoon for a meet and greet. This is the largest gathering of special interest vehicles on Martha’s Vineyard. The event is fun for the entire family and admission is free. Vineyard owners of special interest vehicles such as hot rods, antiques, classics, customs, foreign and domestic are all encouraged to attend. Call cruisemaster Carl Widdiss at 508-645-9528. VTA buses stop right at the park and run every hour. Awards will be given for specific categories.

Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will host a tapas night at the Art Cliff Diner on Tuesday, June 18, with two sittings, one at 5 p.m. and a second at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person to benefit the grand work of the MVC4L, and especially the permanent home of the supportive day program. The board is pleased with the generous support from many local vendors from across the Vineyard who have donated food and beverages for the evening. Tickets can be purchased from board members Karen Achille, Rise Terney, Shirley Dewing, Ginger Duarte, Kevin Ryan, Paul Mohair, Gary Cogley, Jim Klingensmith and yours truly. Reservations may also be made with director Leslie Clapp by calling her at 508-939-9440.

Condolences to the family and friends of Millie Briggs who died at her Tisbury home on May 26 with her daughter Jo Anne by her side. It was always a pleasure to do business with Millie, whether at her shop or at the artisans fairs. It’s nice to still have some of her artwork.

All the best to Michael and Laurie Halt as they head to sunny California to begin their new adventure. Thank you to both for their dedication and commitment to education on the Vineyard. They will definitely be missed and I enjoyed working with them along the way. Welcome to Cora Sadie Marie Keegan who was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on May 20. Cora is the daughter of Todd Keegan and Vanessa Matthews. She is the granddaughter of Anita Vanderhoop Keegan and great-granddaughter of Gloria Fisk of Edgartown.

Condolences to the family and friends of Mary (Francis) Morrice Nickerson who passed away on June 3. Mary was a schoolmate at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. She is survived by her son David Morrice and her grandchildren Jason, Katie and Ben; as well as her brothers, Everett and his wife Carol Koser and Alfred and his wife Mardell Packish, and her sister Jean Laramee. She will be missed, especially by many of her classmates of the class of 1965 and her Edgartown neighbors.

Pat Z. and her husband Charles Preston have arrived from their winter home in Missouri. It is always nice to catch up with Pat and I look forward to many visits with her at the Menemsha Galley.

Welcome to Scout Jeffrey Sherman who was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on May 29. Scout is the son of Aquinnah library director Lisa Sherman and her husband Ezra Sherman of cupcake fame. Scout is the brother of Maisie Sherman who was happy to welcome him home.

Congratulations and all the best to Zachary Smalley, son of Jay and Millicent Smalley, who graduated on June 2 from the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School. Zachary was the recipient of the Marvin Joslow scholarship and the New England Cable News Billy Costa scholarship. Zachary will attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., in the fall. He was honored and celebrated by family and friends at the Aquinnah town hall on Sunday afternoon.

It is rather sad to see the final chapter of the Tuesday edition of the Vineyard Gazette, which will definitely cut down on my ever-growing stack of newspapers. I have a tendency to read the papers online more often now, and with this age of technology it is the way most people are getting the Vineyard Gazette news. It was fun while it lasted but if one only knew what it is like in the newsroom at the office the night before publication — even the younger ones have to be on their toes as the news is changing so fast. In the meantime, I will be able to have a newsletter sent to my email twice a week. I will no longer have to worry about getting to the Tuesday edition and it just makes much more sense in the massive production of the edition, never mind the cost of postage. Amen!
