Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

Chilmark softball — always on Sunday, started 80 years ago at Hazel Flanders’s back lot. It moved to Toomey’s field and is now ensconced at Flanders Field off Tabor House Road. Did you know that Jerry Kohlberg, owner of the Vineyard Gazette, once played in the games? He was a star third baseman and swung a big bat to go with his superlative defensive play. The first game of this summer season is June 23 at 8:30 a.m. Everyone plays. Howie Wall will blow on the bagpipes — Take Me Out to the Ball Game — as Wesley Cottle throws out the ceremonial first pitch. You can join the fun either as a player or a spectator. Box seats are available through Labor Day.
