Thirty artists and thirty members of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club are combining their talents to produce a double dose of beauty this weekend. The artists will create paintings while garden club members will create floral arrangements that capture the artist’s work. The result is Bloomin’ Art 2013, an event modeled after the Museum of Fine Art in Boston’s Art in Bloom show, an annual celebration of floral arrangements inspired by the museum’s masterpieces. The Vineyard event is the same idea but uses local artists, and sometimes local flowers and greenery.
Judy Bryant is one of the organizers of the biennial event and she has also created floral arrangements for the show.
“This is not a judged show but a more relaxed type of show,” Ms. Bryant said. “The floral arrangements use different parts of the art work to interpret the painting. The results will be all different sizes, some as small as six by nine inches and others two by three feet. We’ll have 10 shadowboxes that will hang on the walls and other arrangements on pedestals.”
Ms. Bryant has been a member of the garden club for approximately 35 years. She said that the Bloomin’ Art show has taken place since 2001 when past president Mary Lou Keep suggested the event for the Vineyard. “It’s a great way to see two shows in one — a flower show and an art show,” she said.
Some floral arrangers prepare their pieces at home, others bring materials to the gallery the morning of the event and do their creating on site.
There is an opening reception for the artists and garden club members today, June 28. The benefit exhibit is open to the public on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, June 30, from noon to 3 p.m. The art work will be available for purchase.
