This past spring Margot Datz completed work restoring a mural at the Old Whaling Church in Edgatown. The three-month project brought back to life the original mural painted in the 1840s by Carl Wendt. When Ms. Datz began the project the wall was essentially blank, and many did not know anything had ever existed there.

The mural was completed in March, just in time for a wedding party to enjoy the new space. Others have enjoyed it, too, in the recent months but the mural, which has completely changed the look of the church, has seemed to be an also ran at other events. On Thursday, July 18, the mural gets its due — Vineyard style.

Kate Taylor is performing a concert at the Whaling Church to celebrate the mural.

“The room was glorious enough but to have this mural is fabulous,” Ms. Taylor said. “It is the cherry on the icing on the top of the cake and is worthy of an event to applaud the job Margo did and the original artist.”

The event is also a benefit for phase two of the project spearheaded again by the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust.

“The sidewalls and the back of the room also had murals,” said Ms. Taylor.

Ms. Taylor’s aim is to create a celebration and “to get folks in there who haven’t seen the mural yet.” She and her band, and possibly some guests, will perform a wide variety of music including country, gospel, rockabilly, folk, R&B, Appalachian bluegrass, the woman is versatile. She promises some of “my favorite songs and some new tunes I’ve written.” One of the new songs is Princess on the Pond based on Menemsha Pond. Another is I’ve Got a Message for You. But to know what this song references, “you’ll have to come and find out.”

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18.

Tickets are $25 or $50 for premium tickets which includes forward seating and a meet and greet.
