The 15th annual Ken Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund charity luncheon tees off Sunday, August 18 at the VFW in Oak Bluffs. The event will feature golf items for raffle, and food prepared by Caribbean chef Deon Thomas.

The Ken Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 1998 upon the passing of Ken Williams, an anti-Apartheid activist, humanitarian, noted photographer, jazz promoter, and avid golfer. Williams was passionate about giving a voice to those who were either unheard or unspoken.

To date, the KWMS Fund has awarded over $30,000 to high school seniors from Cambridge and Martha’s Vineyard.

Two annual scholarships have been given to college-bound high school seniors from Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, and beginning in 2003, an additional scholarship was awarded to college-bound high school seniors from Martha’s Vineyard. Those scholarships, the Ken Williams Memorial Humanitarian Scholarship and the Mandred Henry Scholarship for Social Justice  are each worth $1,000.

Mandred Henry, former head of the Martha’s Vineyard NAACP, worked hard to increase racial harmony and to make sure that equality of opportunity and fairness are applied to all people. He was also a longtime friend and golfing companion of Ken Williams.

>The luncheon will take place from from 1 to 4 p.m.  at the VFW Post #9261, 14 Towanticut avenue, Oak Bluffs. More information and tickets are available at kwms2013celebration.eventbrite.com. Tickets are also available at the door.
