Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The following letter was sent to the Chilmark selectmen.

We read about your consideration of requests to lift the prohibition on liquor sale by our Chilmark restaurants. Unfortunately we will be unable to attend the public meeting on the subject but wanted to express ourselves.

Since we have always allowed people to bring and consume their own liquor to restaurants it is obvious that the prohibition is of sale not consumption. To require our local establishments who contribute so much to our community to operate under different rules than all other towns on the Vineyard makes no sense to us.

Whatever the original reasons for the prohibition, to us they seem to no longer apply. We support allowing our wonderful Chilmark establishments to compete under similar rules as prevail Islandwide.

Thank you for considering our views.
