Chilmark has made it through another busy August. Folks in business celebrated on Tuesday by taking the day off! Several of the town shops closed for the day — a steamy gray day it was — to enjoy a moment of rest. Most businesses in town will remain open into the month of September. I will provide a list of closing dates next week.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is featuring a show of the history of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby that should interest up-Islanders. Check out the hours at the website mvmuseum.org.

The holiday weekend was a busy one with many excitements for all. Friday night there were, literally, some fireworks in town — always a treat for all but the dogs. I saw many family reunions and mutual farewells with promises to meet again. We wish all a happy and healthy winter and look forward to our reunions next summer.

Marjorie Good is at her Menemsha home for the fall season, coming from Woodbury, Conn. She is a longtime seasonal resident and enjoyed celebrating her 96th birthday on Friday. Cheers from us all!

The Chilmark Community Church has completed a successful season of flea markets. They do continue to sell the popular lobster rolls on Tuesdays through Sept. 17.

Larsen Lane continues to be a busy place with seasonal residents visiting. Bill and Betsy Ramsey of Wayland enjoyed the holiday week at their Larsen Lane home. Kevin and Kim Kelley vacationed at the Gilmour house on Larsen Lane. Helen and Arne de Keijzer are in from Weston for a fall visit to their home on the lane.

Jack Huberman has arrived for a fall visit to his Menemsha home coming from Santa Fe. He enjoys the fishing at this time of the year.

Lia Kahler and husband Thomas Huber of New York city have been prevented from vacationing at their home on Molly’s Way this summer because of Lia’s need for physical therapy following shoulder surgery. We wish her well and hope she can manage a late fall visit.

The Simonsen family invite us to join them in a celebration the life of Vebeke Andrea Simonsen on Sept. 21 at the family home on Flanders Lane from 4 to 6 p.m. Vebeke died Sept. 14, 2012. Her friends are invited to share stories and memories and the joys of knowing this vibrant lady.

Down on South Road, Dan Leventritt and Jen Wool enjoyed a busy August with several guests visiting them at Blue Barque. Among the guests were chef Lars Jacobsen from Maine and textile artist Lisa Lillibridge from South Dakota and Amos Morrill Jr. from Antigua.

Please note that this column should be improved next week as my eye surgery will be complete and I should have improved vision by then. Please email me all the news and excitements you want to share.
