As of Wednesday morning, 269 homeowners had sent in their commitment letter to Comcast. As you know, 270 are required for Comcast to proceed. Remember that if you mail your letter in to Comcast, c/o Edgartown National Bank, P.O. Box 1029, Edgartown, MA 02539, it must be postmarked no later than Oct. 1. You can also deliver it directly to Pam Dolby in the selectmen’s office at the town hall. Thanks to all who helped out by signing up.

The next potluck supper is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 2. Appetizers begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30. Sally Nicholas will be the host. Potlucks continue through spring on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

Unless you have been invited to Lady Gaga’s fall garden party, you will want to attend Chappalooza at the CCC on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 5 to 9 p.m. Local musicians Ernie, Quincy and Avery Dewing, Gram Allen, Kevin Keady and Kim Hilliard will perform. Ernie tells us that this will be a low-key, family-oriented event. Snacks and drinks will be potluck. See Ernie Dewing on Facebook for more information and news.

Captain Bob Gilkes has agreed to another Watchin’ Wasque presentation on Sunday, Oct. 6. Bob has compiled a very comprehensive photographic record of the erosion at Wasque including updates since his previous talk. Doors open at 1 p.m. with the PowerPoint presentation beginning at 2 p.m.

Since many avid readers are still on the island, Ellen Gurnitz will lead the Chappy Book Club discussion of Ayana Mathis’ debut novel The Twelve Tribes of Hattie on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m. at the CCC. Oprah gave the book four stars on her recommendations list. This intimate narrative tells the story of Hattie Shepard from age 17 through 71 set against the backdrop of the Great Migration. I read the New York Times review and I must say that this book club is not afraid to tackle some serious history.

The derby has attracted a great number of fishing folk to Chappy. I don’t know how many of the winning fish have been caught from our shores, but I do know that our own Peter Sliwkowski weighed in the second largest shore bluefish on day five of the derby. Versie Geary is the weekly female leader with a shore bass that she landed on day eight. Tina Humber-Floyd weighed in the second largest shore blue on day 10, making her the weekly female leader in that division. Also on day 10, Stephan Pond landed the third largest shore bass. The water is cooling down and there are many derby days still ahead. Most days at some point in the tidal cycle, the Chappy Point shore is lined with fisherfolk of all ages.

The Trustees Of Reservations are trying out a new, experimental program offering a Two-Day Cape Pogue and Wasque Over-Sand vehicle pass to derby registrants for $100. Pass purchasers will have the option to add a third consecutive day for $30. If they should then desire to purchase an annual permit, they get credit for the cost of the Two-Day pass towards the $180 annual fee. OSV permits can be purchased at the Mytoi Ranger Station seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the Wasque and Dike Bridge gate houses as well during the weekends. Call 508-627-8390 for up-to-date information on beach access.

Remember, beginning Oct. 20, only one ferry, the On Time II, will be serving Chappy. Unfortunately it is the smaller of the two. You can help us to operate more efficiently by removing your trailer hitch. This often gives us that extra foot necessary to squeeze the third vehicle on board the On Time II. We expect the On Time III to be away for at least 10 days. Check our webcams by googling Chappy Ferry and see daily updates on Facebook.
