The Oak Bluffs selectmen Tuesday unanimously approved increased annual stipends for the fire department.

When requesting the increase, acting fire chief John Rose said the new stipends are more comparable to the pay scale in other towns.

The stipend for the deputy chief is increasing from $2,500 to $8,000, and the stipend for the two assistant chiefs will go from $2,500 to $6,000. Stipends for department firefighters will increase from $800 to $1,200.

In other business, selectmen approved a proposal from the roads and byways committee to make Nashawena avenue one way on either side of Nashawena Park. The northern side of the road will be one direction headed toward Circuit avenue and the southern side of the road will be one direction going toward Waban Park. The change was proposed by a petition from 20 residents.
