Good news about Greta, the great dog who won so many hearts at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. She has been adopted! Last seen, she was sitting regally in the back of her new owners’ car looking right at home. The staff and the volunteers at the shelter are overjoyed both for Greta and for her new family.
Have you ever heard of a singing guinea pig? The shelter has one. His name is Gizmo. Held and cuddled on a warm lap, he launches into song. Although he is a male, his voice is distinctly soprano. Or maybe falsetto. He even has the beat down. The shelter plays classical music in the same room in which he resides. He seems to sing in time to a Mozart mazurka. His quieter brothers have been adopted, but Gizmo remains with us along with his mother, Sofia, who is not nearly as talented, but quiet and very sweet.
Two new kittens have arrived. Roo is a gray tabby, just 12 weeks old, needing all her shots and spaying. The adopter can leave a deposit to be returned when all the necessary medical procedures have been done. The same can be said for Phoebe, another female who is only six months old. She is the color of the fog that rolls over the Island. Her coat is like velvet. She will grow to be a great beauty. The older cats are quite handsome as well. A new male, Boston, looks just like an Egyptian Mau, a rare breed. He is a love kitty. He has just been neutered and is none the worse for the experience. Boston is named for the great city to our north. He was born just after the attack on the marathon. The shelter’s mother cat, Ruby, is quiet and seems sad having nursed her kittens to health and relinquishing all of them to good homes. She should have a home of her own. Prada is aptly named as she is a chic and velvety black. She looks good next to Tux, a male who is always in evening dress. Viola, T.C., Michael, Athena and Esther are still at the shelter, hoping for the right person to walk through the door. Visitors are invited to come see this “pride” of felines when the doors are open. Maybe to fall in love with a feline?
Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
