Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

About 37 years ago my dad took my son to fish in the junior derby. In a photograph of my son standing on the pier fishing, there’s another boy standing on a piling fishing. These two Camp Ground boys met that day and became forever friends. They grew up; they stayed and they left.

They remained friends through all the good times and the bad times and they finally returned to their Island to stay where they married, had their children and still fished in the derby from their “special” place on the pier where they met.

Yesterday my son brought me a photo from the junior derby last week. The scene was that same spot — where a girl named Sam and a boy named Jack fished with their dads looking on, smiling and remembering.

What a wonderful place we live in.
