The dearth of dogs at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has been corrected by the arrival of Jackie and his mother, Lady. Lady is a black cocker spaniel and Jackie is part cocker, of course, but of questionable paternity. They have an astounding history as both dogs were kept in an outdoor enclosure with only dog houses for protection from the elements. Despite that, both Jackie and Lady have impeccable inside manners and are very friendly. The shelter is grateful for the expert ministrations of the talented groomer, Ellen Blodgett, who performed miracle makeovers on these dogs. Since they are both on the senior side, nine and 11 years old, the adoption fee will be waived for their new owners. According to the SPCA calendar, November is Adopt an Older Pet month. They are available to be placed individually or together. They will be grateful for a warm bed and a real roof over their heads.

The cat population at the shelter has been reduced by three. Kittens Batman and Clinger have departed for grander digs. T.C., the cuddly calico is also in a new home. Having been spayed and inoculated, Etta, the young cat whose litter of kittens were all placed, is making herself at home in the cat room. She is a beautiful small pale orange tiger with double paws. She’s barely out of kittenhood herself. Michael, the large black male, and Tux, a (what else?) tuxedo cat, keep Etta company while awaiting new owners. Arriving in less than perfect condition, Sydney, Homer and Linda will be joining them after some medical intervention.

The singing guinea pig, Gizmo, is still available to amuse some lucky person with his yodeling, and so is his serene mother, Sofia, who just enjoys lap sitting. Both guinea pigs are the short haired variety, brown and white, soft and sweet. These are undemanding pets who will never need to be walked or brushed and are happy with carrots and lettuce for dinner.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. Call 508-627-8662.
