The weather last weekend was seasonable and with the rapidly falling leaves, time change, cooler temperatures and lowering the storm windows, we are slowly falling into the grasp of winter. We had over an inch of rain last Thursday — not much seeing that we had the third driest October on record. We were the recipient of a blast of cold weather and a bit of snow on Tuesday.

Alan Healy repositioned his herd of sheep into the square field late last month and has been moving them in the area. They have responded by neatly mowing the field. As you may have noticed, the deer have been moving around lately, primarily due to the hunting season. You are apt to see them in the strangest places or crossing the road. Archery season for deer is in progress.

Warren and Marilyn Hollinshead have been traveling recently. In early October, to celebrate their daughter Ellen’s 50th birthday, they took all the family for a weekend at Rudyard Kipling’s house, which he built in the 1890s just west of Brattleboro, Vt. That’s where he wrote some of his most famous novels like The Jungle Book. Then they made a trip up the Danube River stopping at Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Salzburg and then Prague, Dresden and Berlin, where Marilyn was a student in the 1950s. They are back in town and plan to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday here with family.

On Saturday night, Nov. 11, 1950 the Norman Benson family in Lambert’s Cove thought they heard the familiar though far out-of-season music of pinkletinks. For generations it has been an accepted tradition that they announce the arrival of spring with their piping. Well, the Benson’s granddaughter, Margaret Duquette, succeeded in capturing two of them, which were put in a globe in the kitchen and continued to announce that spring had arrived. Various people asked about the pinkletinks said that never before had they known of the peepers appearing during the fall of the year.
