Venus on the Move

Venus is so close at the moment that you might be able to see the horns, also called cusps. But in the nights ahead, Venus will appear lower in the western sky. Soon Venus will overtake the Earth in its race around the sun. When it does, on January 11, the planet will thereafter reappear in the morning sky.

Venus is currently 26 million miles away. No planet gets closer to the earth than Venus. Consider that the Sun is 93 million miles away.

Saturn and Moon

A thin crescent moon appears tomorrow morning near the bright planet Saturn. The two rise in the east about two hours before sunrise. You can see them in residence low in the southeastern sky in the zodiacal constellation Libra.

Jupiter

The bright planet Jupiter is above the eastern sky after sunset. Jupiter rises throughout the evening and will be closest to us, in opposition, on January 5. The planet is 390 million miles away and that is about as close as it gets.
