A Vineyard tradition during the darkest and coldest months of the year, churches from around the Island take turns providing community suppers at which all are always welcome, and the food is free.

On Saturdays beginning Jan. 11, the Methodist Church holds community suppers beginning at 6 p.m. at the Trinity Parish House in Oak Bluffs.

On Sundays the Federated Church in Edgartown hosts a lasagna lunch through the end of March from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown.

Monday suppers begin on Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. in the Baylies Room at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown.

On Tuesdays, Chilmark Church holds a soup supper from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 508-645-3100 or visit chilmarkchurch.org.

The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury began its Wednesday night suppers on Jan. 1. Sunday services in January will be held at the Agricultural Hall due to construction in the sanctuary but the suppers will continue to be held in the church parish hall. For more information or for help with transportation, call 508-693-2842.

The Good Shepherd Parish holds its suppers on Thursdays at St. Augustine’s in Vineyard Haven from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed.

And on Friday, Jan. 3, at 5 p.m. Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven begins its suppers at 5 p.m. Because of construction at the church, the suppers will take place at the First Baptist Church parish hall on William street, just off Spring street. The suppers will be served every Friday through March 28. To donate or to volunteer, call Grace Church at 508-693-0332.
