Due to delays in the delivery of supplies, the Oak Bluffs fishing pier which was originally set to open in October, will not be finished for at least a few more weeks.

“The biggest problem we have had is the slow delivery of materials,” confirmed project manager Doug Cameron, assistant director of the department of fishing and boating access. “And although they placed their orders well in advance, the shipments have not come in on a timely schedule.”

When finished, the fishing pier will stretch out 317 feet into Nantucket Sound. The pier is designed to be family friendly and wheelchair accessible. Access will be from Sea View extension, about 200 feet beyond the Steamship Authority dock.

The bid price for the project was $1 million, won by General Atlantic Support Installation Inc. of Hopedale. The project is financed by the state.

Mr. Cameron said the state will likely host a ceremony for the opening of the new pier near the beginning of the fishing season.
