The Vineyard Haven Public Library begins a six-week long film and lecture series entitled America’s Music: A History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

The series will feature showings of six award-winning documentary films about uniquely American musical art genres including gospel, blues, jazz, bluegrass, Broadway show tunes and hip hop, followed by short lectures and performances by local musicians and musicologists. Peter Boak, the director of the Martha’s Vineyard Community Chorus, is the program scholar for the series.

The series begins with a free screening on Jan. 22 of the documentary Say Amen, Somebody held at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center, Tisbury Marketplace, 79 Beach Road. The remainder of the screenings, lectures and performances will take place at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven.
