The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has a few nice animals who need good homes.

Like the rest of the Island, the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is in a post-holiday lull. There is only one canine resident, the bichon frisee named Jackson. He has been transformed by Ellen, the groomer par excellence, into a mass of white curls surrounding his black button eyes. Thank you, Ellen. Jackson is a people person who needs his new owner to be within eyesight or earshot. He will be happiest cuddled up on the couch next to you or serenely resting at your feet.

Lucky, a big tabby tom cat, was brought to us by a woman who had been feeding him for some time. He was definitely a house cat once because he is sweet and friendly. Maybe he actually belongs to someone who is reading this column right now. If so, he can be reclaimed at the shelter. The other new arrival is Lacey, a small black kitten who can be adopted after she is spayed. Joe Frazier, a big black male who shows no aggressive tendencies, Bubba, Bootsie, O.B., Penny and Tortellini are still occupying the cozy cat room where they can be visited and, with luck, adopted by anyone willing to give them a forever home. Some good news — the big gray cat with tabby markings named Richard is a stray no longer, having been given a permanent place to settle this week.

The shelter welcomes visitors and volunteers. Drop in to pet and play with the animals during these quiet winter days.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday.
