The Edgartown police are investigating the apparent theft and vandalism of a shark sculpture from Sharky’s Restaurant Friday night.

The statue, a woodcarving that measures seven feet tall, was discovered by a motorist at 11:30 p.m. Friday on Upper Main street at the entrance to the restaurant’s parking lot, according to the police report. It appeared to have been ripped from its mahogany pedestal outside the restaurant’s entrance, and dragged down the street, creating marks on the pavement, police said. The sculpture sustained significant damage.

The police said surveillance tapes may reveal further details about the method and agent of the theft.

Sharky’s owner JB Blau, who commissioned the sculpture last summer, is offering a $1,000 restaurant gift card reward for information that leads to an arrest.
