Chilmark is more than ready to welcome spring . . . whenever it decides to arrive! Today started off with a temperature in the teens, but by noon has made it to 40 so we are hopeful for more. The sprouting spring flowers seem to have no fear of cold nights and just keep climbing higher out of the cold ground. I am trying to adopt their attitude and persevere myself. The full moon this week past was visible and pleasurable to behold. It is called the Worm Moon. I haven’t looked up why.

Funeral services for Louis S. Larsen will take place tomorrow at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery in Chilmark at 10:30 a.m., and a reception will immediately follow at the Chilmark Community Center. It is still hard to imagine the waterfront at Menemsha without Louie.

Massachusetts state senator Dan Wolf will be on the Island for a meet and greet on March 26 at the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company in Oak Bluffs. The reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. And all are invited to attend and to ask questions about state government.

Patrick Ruhl is home this week after a long trip from here to Cape Town, South Africa, and back. He was invited to be the best man at the wedding of some friends he made a few years ago while he was sailing in the South Pacific. Patrick is the son of Barbara Morgan Armstrong and the grandson of Jim and Roberta Morgan, all of Chilmark.

Please mark your calendars for April 9 when the Chilmark selectmen will host the fourth and final hearing on the proposed changes to the Squibnocket Beach and parking lot. Jim O’Connell, geologist and land use specialist, will be in attendance and ready to answer your questions. Information from the earlier hearings can be found on the town’s website under news and announcements. The meeting on April 9 will be at 6 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. This will be the last hearing before the annual town meeting on April 28 where we will be asked to vote on whether or not we want the selectmen to pursue the plan. We will be asked to vote again before any plan is put in place.

The Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group is a nonprofit organization that provides shellfish seed to all the towns on the Island. They are hosting their annual fun-raiser in Chilmark on April 12. They will offer music by Johnny Hoy, silent auctions, raw bar and chowder contest. Restaurants who are participating in the contest are Atria, Harbor View Hotel, Herring Run Kitchen Caterers, Beach Plum Inn, Lucky Hank, the Newes and others. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. Sounds like a fun evening for a good cause.

April 19 is the date of the last of the music and pot luck evenings held this winter at the Chilmark Community Center. All are welcome to come out and make music. It has been a highlight of the winter for many musicians. We are asked to bring a pot luck dish to share and our musical instrument.

The big news in Menemsha is that the new harbormaster’s office and general all-around office for the harbor is being built by the students of building trades at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School under the direction of teacher Bill Seaborn. The almost-completed building will be moved to the bulkhead this week, and the students will complete the work on-site. The existing building will be moved across the road and a new life for it will be planned. The building under construction is planned to be 12 by 16 feet.

The Chilmark planning board will hold a subcommittee meeting on March 31 at 3 p.m. At the town hall to discuss the feasibility and wording of a possible bylaw to protect the historic homes of Chilmark. All are welcome to attend and contribute ideas.
