At the annual town meeting in Oak Bluffs next Tuesday, April 8, there will be a resolution to vote on requesting a responsible decommission and shutdown of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth. The plant has extended operation beyond its recommended lifetime of 40 years and has been downgraded to a list of the nine worst performers in the country. With a design model similar to the Fukishima plant, it poses similar dangers in case of extended power outages. There is no MEMA evacuation plan in place for the Cape and Islands in case of an accident because none is conceivable. All 15 towns on the Cape have voted by a landslide majority to close the plant, and Gov. Deval Patrick and Sen. Dan Wolf have also been strongly advocating for a decommission and shutdown as soon as possible.
