Regional High School student Isabelle Crawford was named best in show in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition. Her photograph of an oak tree in North Tisbury will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol.

Six high school students from Martha’s Vineyard won awards in the national art competition, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Bill Keating. The art competition is sponsored by the Congressional Institute. Students submit entries in several categories to their representative’s office, and a panel of artists from the congressional district serve as judges. Winning submissions hang in the Capitol building for one year.

Isabelle, a sophomore, took the winning photograph while on an assignment for the Vineyard Conservation Society to explore parts of the Vineyard that should be preserved, high school art department chair Chris Baer said in a press release. Her subject was a large ailing oak tree that has been well-photographed over the years, including by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

“Isabelle took a fresh approach to her subject by ignoring the massive trunk and focusing on the textures made by its limbs against the clouds, in rich black and white tones,” the press release from Mr. Keating’s office said.

“We’re very proud of each of our six winners of this competition,” Mr. Baer said in the press release. “They all richly deserved their awards, and they all worked very hard to earn them. Our high school has never had an opportunity to exhibit work in the U.S. Capitol, and we are all excited for Isabelle and our school community.”

“I want to congratulate all those who participated and won awards in this year’s Congressional Art Competition, especially our best in show winner Isabelle Crawford,” Rep. Keating said.

Other Vineyard winners include Courtney Howell, first place in photography with Where Art Thou? and Elizabeth Dourian, second place in photography with Road to Lighthouse. Kylie Hathaway and Alistair Rizza won honorable mentions in photography, Kylie with I Stopped to Ponder and Alistair with I Could Use a Wish.

Kiara Vought won honorable mention in painting with Woman in Blue.
