Edgartown police responded to a one-car accident Sunday in which a car struck the corner of a house on Pinehurst Road, police said.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel were dispatched to Pinehurst Road because of a motor vehicle accident just after 4 p.m. Sunday, an Edgartown police press release said. While initial reports said the car was inside a house, police said they located the 2006 red Lincoln town car up against a corner of a house on Pinehurst Road.

The driver, Stephen L. Doyle, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said. He was conscious but incoherent, and he sustained head and facial injuries and potential internal injuries, the press release said. Edgartown paramedics treated him before transporting him to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Police said an investigation found Mr. Doyle was driving northwest on Pinehurst Road toward Chase Road when he crossed the roadway, hit a split rail fence, ran through a stop sign at Chase Road, and then drove onto the property at 66 Pinehurst Road. There the car ran over a post and a tree and struck the corner of the house, police said. People were inside the home but uninjured.

Alcohol and speed were ruled out as factors in the incident, the press release said. Mr. Doyle was issued a citation for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign, and marked lanes violation.
