The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is down to three guinea pigs for adoption. Sci-fi fans would love these little critters. They all have brilliant red eyes! There are two girls, Lucy and Ethel, and one boy, Robert. Now that the nice weather is here they enjoy being taken for an outing on a green lawn so they can nibble away at the sweet green grass. A small part of your yard will be cut for free if you adopt one or more of these easy-care pets.

A new dog has come to us, surrendered by the owner who can no longer keep up with her need for exercise. Lucy is a black lab mix with soulful eyes and a sweet disposition. She has been spayed and has had all her vaccinations. She is eight years old, but, as they say, doesn’t look it. She has been a loving companion for all that time to her previous owner and will be the same to her next one.

The population of the cat room has been reduced by the adoption of Foxy, the Maine coon cat. We still have Quitsa, a young black male who is very sociable and Cody, a female with a retiring nature. The four orange kittens will be going to their new homes shortly as will their mom whose potential owners have visited her faithfully and who have been patiently waiting for her throughout her pregnancy and lying-in.

Plans are afoot for our annual garden party. It is not only a beautiful party, but serves as a major source of fundraising for the shelter. It will take place on Monday, June 30. Anyone interested in attending this event should call the shelter and ask to be put on the guest list. Invitations are limited.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations.
